The Sithonia Municipality and the Panayotis and Effie Michelis\nFoundation present at the Historical and Folklore Museum of Nikiti the\nexhibition of archaeological photography by Socratis Mavrommatis “\u0391\u03a0\u039f\u03a3\u03a0\u0391\u03a3\u039c\u0391\u03a4\u0391\/ FRAGMENTS\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is produced by the Panayotis and Effie Michelis Foundation\nand was successfully presented for the first time in Athens in February 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition presents a small part of the work of the internationally\nacclaimed photographer Socratis Mavrommatis, who has dedicated his life to\n“applied” archaeological photography, developing a dialogue between\nPhotography, Archeology, Art and Aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Friday, June 21, at 9.00 pm<\/strong>, and will be open\nuntil September 30<\/strong> for educational\npurposes, so that schools in the area can also visit it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition is part of the cooperation of the Sithonia Municipality\nwith leading representatives of the intellectual and artistic world and marks\nthe constant will of the Municipal Authority and the Mayor himself to present\nto residents and visitors events of high intellectual and artistic quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selection of the photos presented, including both black and white,\nand colour photographs, were handpicked by the artist.  The works depicted come from museums and\narchaeological sites of Greece as well as from the documentation of the\nrestoration works conducted on the Acropolis in Athens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to providing documentation for archaeology scholars,\nhowever, his work brings to the fore details that are often invisible to the\nnaked eye, communicating the photographer\u2019s emotional involvement with his\nsubject. His omnipresent, discrete gaze reveals important aspects of monuments\nand archaeological finds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe aesthetics of applied photography in archaeology evolved during the\nfirst one hundred years of photographically capturing monuments and objects of\narchaeological interest. From the 1850s to the early 1960s, translating a\ncolourful reality into a black and white representation necessitated reading\nantiquity in an abstract manner and, consequently, acknowledging the artistic\nnature of representation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In later years, when the shortcomings of colour photography in terms of\nreliability and life span were addressed, antiquity photography lost in\nartistic quality but gained in documentative power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In contrast to the mature aesthetic of black and white photography,\ncolour forced both photographers and viewers to accept a \u2018truth\u2019 closer to\nreality; yet, it also introduced a new element, one seeking to capture new\nforms, abstract patterns, or details of a new and exciting microcosm \u2013 the\nimperceptible information contained within a fragment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These photos share a fragmentary quality in their rendering of monuments\nand objects, taking detail to the level of near invisibility, where\ndocumentation is served side by side with artistic intention. Fitting within\nthe genre of applied photography in archaeology, these photographs were taken\nto serve in the documentation of the Acropolis of Athens restoration project\nand as illustrations in archaeological books and catalogues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Socratis Mavrommatis<\/strong> was born in Athens in 1949. He has\nparticipated in many photography exhibitions in Greece and abroad. From 1979 to\n2010 he was the chief photographer for the Hellenic Ministry of Culture at the\nAcropolis Restoration Project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
