THE PANAYOTIS & EFFIE MICHELIS FOUNDATION
The Library of the Michelis Foundation specializes in aesthetics, architecture, fine arts, philosophy of art and philosophy in general. It is housed in a specially remodeled space, which includes a reading room for the public and the book stacks.
The main body of the holdings belongs to the personal collection of Panayotis Michelis and his wife Effie; this is the reason why a large number of volumes are inscribed by the authors to the Michelis couple. The effort to bring the main collection up-to-date with the addition of the most recent publications and to locate out-of-print titles is ongoing. The electronic catalogue (Horizon integrated library system) contains approximately 22,000 bibliographical entries.
The main collection includes books and numerous rare offprints of articles in various languages (mainly Greek, English, French, German and Italian). Many of these titles are first editions.
The collection of periodicals consists of Greek and foreign publications and includes complete runs of the most authoritative periodicals on aesthetics, i.e. the British Journal of Aesthetics, the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, the Revue d’Esthétique and Nouvelle Revue d’Esthétique, the Rivista di Estetica, and, of course, the Chronika Aisthetikes / Annales d’Esthétique / Annals for Aesthetics, which is published by the Michelis Foundation.
The electronic catalogue contains an unrivalled database of 5,000 articles resulting from indexing the above complete runs.
The collection of old books contains approximately 300 titles published before 1900 (access by arrangement).
The collection of Greek classics includes approximately 600 volumes of texts either in the original or in translation, in various editions.
The Library is open to the public for study in its premises (it is not a lending library) and is of special interest to researchers, students and academic teachers. Readers have access to the catalogue and the Internet and may use their own laptops. Under certain conditions and restrictions the Library can provide photocopies.
The Library houses the Archives of the International Association for Aesthetics (IAA). The digitization of the complete series of proceedings of the International Congresses on Aesthetics, which are also housed in the Archives, was completed recently and is at the disposal of researchers.
Continuous enrichment through acquisitions or gifts, updating of the collections and linking with Universities and cultural institutes in Greece and abroad aim at rendering the Library an important international research centre in aesthetics.
As of January 2009 you can access the on-line catalogue (OPAC) of the Library.
